The good news is that quick, calm action can usually turn things around before the situation becomes life-threatening.

Know what heat exhaustion is before you treat it
Heat exhaustion happens when the body overheats and struggles to regulate its temperature. It often follows heavy sweating, dehydration, prolonged sun exposure, high humidity, or hard physical activity in hot conditions.
The body normally cools itself through sweating and blood flow to the skin. When heat, humidity, dehydration, or exertion overwhelm that system, core temperature can rise and circulation can strain. That strain causes many of the symptoms people notice first, such as weakness, dizziness, nausea, and heavy sweating.
Heat exhaustion is serious, but it is not the same as heat stroke.
Heat exhaustion can become heat stroke if cooling does not happen soon enough. Heat stroke is a medical emergency that can damage the brain, heart, kidneys, and muscles. The safest approach is to treat heat exhaustion early and watch closely for any signs that the person is getting worse.
Recognize the symptoms of heat exhaustion
The first step is to notice the pattern. Heat exhaustion often appears during hot weather or shortly after activity in the heat. The person may look pale, flushed, drained, or unsteady. They may insist they are “just tired,” but their body may be sending clear warning signs.
Common symptoms include:
Heavy sweating
Cool, pale, clammy, or flushed skin
Weakness or unusual fatigue
Dizziness or lightheadedness
Headache
Nausea or vomiting
Muscle cramps
Fast or weak pulse
Thirst
Irritability or feeling faint
Dark urine or reduced urination
Mild confusion from fatigue or dehydration
The person may not have every symptom. Some people sweat heavily. Others may have nausea and dizziness as the main signs. In humid weather, sweat may not evaporate well, so the body can overheat even when the person is sweating.
Watch for a change in behavior
Behavior changes deserve attention. A person with heat exhaustion might slow down, stop talking much, stumble, sit down suddenly, or seem unusually frustrated. They may stop making good decisions, such as refusing water or trying to keep exercising.
A mild attitude change can happen with dehydration and overheating. But confusion, fainting, seizures, or loss of consciousness are emergency signs, not simple heat exhaustion.
Check the situation, not just the person
Heat exposure is part of the diagnosis. Ask simple questions:
Has the person been exercising, working, or standing outside?
Is the air hot, humid, or still?
Are they wearing heavy clothing or protective gear?
Have they had enough water today?
Have they been drinking alcohol?
Are they older, very young, pregnant, or living with a medical condition?
Do they take medications that affect hydration, sweating, blood pressure, or alertness?
You do not need a perfect answer. If the setting is hot and the symptoms fit, begin cooling right away.
Decide whether this is an emergency
Before treating heat exhaustion as a routine problem, check for signs of heat stroke or another emergency. Heat-related illness can change quickly.
Call 911 right away if the person has any of these symptoms:
Confusion that is more than mild or does not improve quickly
Fainting or loss of consciousness
Seizure
Trouble walking, speaking, or staying awake
Chest pain
Shortness of breath
Repeated vomiting
A very high body temperature if you can measure it
Hot skin with severe symptoms, whether dry or sweaty
Symptoms that worsen despite cooling
Symptoms that do not improve after about 30 to 60 minutes of active cooling and rest
Do not wait for the person to stop sweating before you call for help. A common myth says heat stroke always means dry skin. That is not reliable. People with heat stroke may still sweat, especially after exercise.
If someone is confused, unconscious, having a seizure, or unable to drink safely, call 911 and start cooling while help is on the way.
Follow these steps to treat heat exhaustion
The goal is simple: stop the heat exposure, cool the body, replace fluids if the person can drink safely, and watch for worsening symptoms.
1. Move the person to a cooler place
Get the person out of the heat as soon as possible. Choose the coolest safe location nearby:
An air-conditioned building
A shaded area with airflow
A car with air conditioning running
A cool room with a fan
A shelter away from direct sun
Have them stop all activity. Do not let them “push through” the symptoms. Physical effort creates more body heat and can make the illness worse.
If the person feels faint, help them sit or lie down. A fall can cause a second injury. If they are dizzy, unsteady, or weak, support them while moving.
2. Remove extra clothing and gear
Help the body release heat. Loosen or remove unnecessary layers, such as:
Jackets or hoodies
Heavy protective gear
Helmets if safe to remove
Pads or backpacks
Tight collars, belts, or waistbands
Thick socks or shoes if they are resting safely
Keep the person’s privacy and comfort in mind. The goal is cooling, not exposure. Light, loose clothing is best while they recover.
If clothing is soaked with sweat and trapping heat, changing into dry, light clothing can help once immediate cooling has started. In the first few minutes, focus on getting them to a cool place and cooling the skin.
3. Cool the skin right away
Start active cooling. Do not wait to see if rest alone works.
Good cooling methods include:
Apply cool, wet towels or cloths to the skin
Mist the skin with cool water
Fan the person while the skin is damp
Place cold packs wrapped in cloth on the neck, armpits, and groin
Have them take a cool shower if they can stand safely
Help them sit in a cool bath if they are alert and able to get in and out safely
The neck, armpits, and groin are useful cooling spots because major blood vessels lie close to the surface there. Cooling those areas can help lower body heat.
Do not use freezing cold packs directly on bare skin. Wrap them in a thin towel to prevent skin injury. Do not force someone into an ice bath unless emergency responders or trained medical staff direct it, especially if the person is confused, weak, or at risk of drowning.

4. Give small sips of cool fluids if they are alert
If the person is awake, not confused, and able to swallow normally, offer small sips of cool water. Do not force them to chug.
Small, steady sips are easier on the stomach, especially if nausea is present. If the person has been sweating for a long time or working hard, an electrolyte drink can help replace salt and fluids. Oral rehydration solution, a sports drink, or water with a salty snack may be useful if available.
Avoid:
Alcohol
Very sugary drinks in large amounts
Energy drinks
Caffeine-heavy drinks
Salt tablets unless a clinician has recommended them
Fluids if the person is confused, vomiting repeatedly, or not fully awake
If they vomit once, pause fluids for a few minutes, keep cooling, then try very small sips again if they are alert. If vomiting continues, get medical help.
5. Have them rest in a safe position
Once the person is in a cooler place and cooling has started, help them rest. Sitting or lying down is best.
If they feel faint, lying flat with legs slightly raised may help blood flow back toward the heart. If they are nauseated, position them on their side or sitting slightly forward to reduce choking risk if they vomit.
Keep checking their breathing, alertness, skin, and comfort. Talk to them in short, calm sentences. Ask how they feel every few minutes. Improvement should be clear, not subtle.
Signs of improvement include:
Less dizziness
Less nausea
Slower pulse
Better color
Clearer thinking
Less sweating or more comfortable sweating
Ability to sit up and talk normally
Reduced cramps or headache
Rest should continue even if they begin to feel better. Heat exhaustion can return if the person goes back into the heat too soon.
6. Monitor symptoms for at least an hour
Heat exhaustion is not over the moment someone says, “I’m fine.” The body needs time to return to normal. Keep the person in a cool place and watch for changes.
During the first 30 to 60 minutes, check:
Are they becoming more alert?
Is dizziness fading?
Can they keep fluids down?
Are cramps improving?
Is nausea easing?
Is their skin cooling?
Is their pulse settling?
Are they able to speak clearly?
If symptoms get worse or do not improve with cooling and rest, seek medical care. If emergency signs appear, call 911.
7. Do not let them return to heat or activity the same day
This is where many people make a mistake. A person may feel better after 20 minutes in air conditioning and want to finish the hike, practice, shift, game, or yardwork. That can be risky.
After heat exhaustion, the body may remain sensitive to heat for the rest of the day. Returning to exertion too soon can bring symptoms back and increase the risk of heat stroke.
A safer plan is:
Stop activity for the day
Stay in a cool environment
Drink fluids gradually
Eat a light meal or snack if tolerated
Avoid alcohol
Avoid hot showers, saunas, and more sun exposure
Rest until fully recovered
If symptoms were moderate or severe, or if the person has a medical condition, they should check with a healthcare professional before returning to strenuous activity.
Know when heat exhaustion may need medical care
Not every case requires an ambulance, but some situations call for medical advice or urgent evaluation. Heat illness can overlap with dehydration, low blood sugar, infection, heart problems, medication effects, and other conditions.
Get medical help if:
The person is older, very young, pregnant, or medically fragile
They have heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, or another serious condition
They take medications that affect fluid balance, blood pressure, mental status, or sweating
They vomit repeatedly
They faint, even briefly
Symptoms last more than an hour
Symptoms return after initial improvement
They cannot drink enough fluids
They have severe cramps or weakness
You are unsure whether it is heat exhaustion or heat stroke
When in doubt, choose safety. Calling a nurse line, urgent care, or emergency services is better than waiting while someone overheats.
Avoid common mistakes that make heat exhaustion worse
Good first aid is often simple. The biggest danger comes from delay, denial, or the wrong kind of help.
Do not tell them to tough it out
Heat exhaustion is not a willpower problem. Continuing activity increases heat production and fluid loss. Stop the activity right away.
Do not give fever medicine to cool them down
Medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen do not fix heat illness the way they can help with fever from infection. Heat exhaustion comes from overheating and dehydration, so cooling and fluids are the main treatment.
These medicines may also be unsafe for some people, especially if dehydration, kidney problems, stomach irritation, or liver concerns are present. Use medical advice before giving medication.
Do not rely on thirst alone
Thirst is useful, but it can lag behind fluid needs. A person may already be dehydrated before they feel very thirsty. Small, steady sips work better than waiting until thirst becomes intense.
Do not leave the person alone

Do not cool only the face

Anyone can get heat exhaustion, including healthy athletes and people used to warm climates. Some people face higher risk because their bodies have a harder time staying cool or because they may not notice symptoms early.

Use electrolytes during long, sweaty activity

Urine color is not perfect. Vitamins, foods, and health conditions can change it. Still, dark urine with low output during heat exposure is a warning sign.
Dress for heat release
Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing when practical. Choose breathable fabrics. Use a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses for sun protection, but remove extra gear during breaks if it traps heat.
For sports, job sites, and protective equipment, schedule cooling breaks. Gear can block sweat evaporation and trap heat close to the body.

For older adults, take symptoms seriously and cool early. If the person lives alone or has limited access to air conditioning, arrange a cooler place during heat waves, such as a family member’s home, cooling center, library, or community space.
Medical advice is wise if symptoms occur in an older adult, especially if they take multiple medications or have heart, kidney, or blood pressure conditions.

Return to normal activity slowly
Recovery does not end when the person feels better. The body needs time to fully recover from overheating.
For mild heat exhaustion that improves quickly, rest in a cool place for the rest of the day. Keep drinking fluids gradually. Eat if hungry and not nauseated. Sleep in a cool room if possible.
For moderate symptoms, repeated symptoms, or symptoms during sports or work, a more cautious return is best. The person should be symptom-free at rest before doing anything strenuous again. If symptoms return with light activity, stop and seek medical advice.
Athletes, outdoor workers, and people in protective gear should follow return-to-play or return-to-work guidance from a qualified healthcare professional, athletic trainer, or safety officer when available.
What effective treatment looks like
Successful treatment has a clear pattern. The person is out of the heat, resting, cooling down, drinking safely if able, and becoming more alert and comfortable. Dizziness fades. Nausea improves. Cramps ease. Skin feels cooler. The person can speak clearly, sit up without feeling faint, and keep fluids down.
If that pattern does not happen, or if severe symptoms appear at any point, get medical help.
Heat exhaustion is manageable when people act early. Recognize the signs, stop activity, cool the body, offer fluids carefully, and keep watching. The most effective treatment is not complicated, but it does require urgency. When the body says the heat is too much, listen the first time.
